Southern African HIV Clinician’s Society

The Society, established in 1997, is an affiliate of the South African Medical Association (SAMA), and is the largest professional HIV interest group in the world, with over 14,000 members in 2008. The Society provides technical, clinical and scientific advice to a range of organizations campaigning for improved care and support for people with HIV. Its vision is to promote the highest quality and most cost effective standard of healthcare for all persons in Southern Africa infected and affected by HIV.

Ukwanda Centre for Rural Health

Stellenbosch University launched the Ukwanda Centre for Rural Health (generally referred to as ‘Ukwanda’) in 2002, initially to create a rural platform for undergraduate training and more recently also to conduct research on rural health issues. The Xhosa word "Ukwanda" means to grow (advantageously) and develop within (the context of) the community. In keeping with its name the Centre coordinates and support of comprehensive, community-based training and research in rural areas.

Wits Centre for Rural Health

Established in 2007, the Wits University Centre for Rural Health aims to bring together development initiatives in rural health within the Faculty of Health Sciences. It is involved in nurturing rural students through the WIRHE scholarship programme, supporting undergraduate and postgraduate training for health sciences students, primary care development in rural provinces especially through the establishment of district learning sites, conducting research and policy development. It is closely linked to the Faculty’s Division of Rural Health.
